Creative Derbyshire newsletter: December 2012

A warm welcome to the third Creative Derbyshire newsletter, bringing you the latest news of interest to the creative industries sector in Derbyshire

Forthcoming Business Workshops

Over the next few months we will continue to provide high quality, tailored training events for creative businesses, focusing on the areas where you have told us you need the most support. Places tend to book up fast so make sure you don’t miss out! Visit our Eventbrite page now to check out details of our forthcoming workshops and secure your place.

Our popular Press & PR workshop in Buxton in November sold out within 48 hours so we quickly secured a further two dates in the new year (11 February in Buxton and 13 February in Swadlincote). There are still places available on both of these courses, so book your place now! We are also talking to Culture Business about devising a ‘stage 2’ workshop which explores Marketing, PR & Brand Development in more depth.  This is likely to take place in April so watch this space.

Our latest new workshop Pricing Strategy for Creative Businesses took place at the end of November and was delivered by Liz Foxwell-Canning from Stylists for Business. The workshop proved to be really useful for participants and we are booking Liz again to deliver another session in the New Year.

We are also holding a free workshop, Self-Employment, Tax and Managing a Portfolio Career in Buxton on the 16 January with HMRC. The session will help creatives with complex working lives look after their tax affairs. For more information visit our Eventbrite page.

Please remember that our workshops and training events are extremely popular and tend to sell out quickly, so we advise early booking to avoid disappointment. We try and offer workshops in a range of locations across Derbyshire to ensure that everyone has the chance to attend. If there are topics which you would like to see in our development programme, please do tell us. We need feedback on how the programme is doing and welcome your comments.

Putting Creative in the Economy

On the 31st January we will be hosting a business breakfast in partnership with Destination Chesterfield on the subject of how creativity can be a major driver for economic growth in the County.  The business breakfast will be held at Ringwood Hall near Chesterfield with key speakers from major Derbyshire businesses that rely on creativity as their driver of growth. These include Smiths of Derby the clockmakers, Wild in Art and Audio Trails.  For more information visit our eventbrite page.

Derbyshire Times Business Awards - Creative Innovation Award

Our huge congratulations go to Audio Trails of Higham, North East Derbyshire for being the winner of the inaugural Creative Innovation Award at the Derbyshire Times Business Awards 2012.  The award, which is sponsored by Creative Derbyshire, was a new category at the Business Awards this year.

Audio Trails have produced in excess of 60 downloadable and interactive audio trails across Britain, containing carefully crafted stories for individual tours of towns, museums, tourist attractions and the countryside.  Dan Boys, Creative Director at Audio Trails collected the award from Cllr John Allsop, Cabinet Member for Technology and Recycling at Derbyshire County Council.  Dan said “We are absolutely delighted to be the first winners of this particular award. We were up against some formidable opponents on the shortlist and it is a real honour to be acknowledged in this way. It rounds off a great year for us.”

Jane Brown, Co-ordinator of the Creative Derbyshire programme stated, “We are delighted to be able to sponsor this award working with the Derbyshire Times. Celebrating and promoting an innovative creative sector in the County is one of our main ambitions.”

The other shortlisted businesses for the award were Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team, Déda Producing, King George Gallery, Ilkeston and the Twin Oaks Hotel, Chesterfield.

Creative Research

We are currently undertaking research into the health of the creative sector in Derbyshire, which is important for the future planning of the programme.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could spare a few moments to complete our short survey.  Please click here.

Creative Careers Event

Following the successful Creative Careers Fair at Chesterfield College in June 2012, we are working with the College again to deliver another careers-focused event during National Careers Week on Monday 4 March 2013. The day will comprise of a fair with exhibitors from the creative sector, careers advice and guidance, exhibitions, workshops and presentations from artists and creative businesses. The free event will give young people aged 16-24 the chance to learn all about potential career pathways and destination routes into a creative career. If you are interested in taking part as an exhibitor or would like further information about the event, please get in touch via email (mailto:info@creativederbyshire.com).

Postgraduate Placement 2013

Creative Derbyshire is again working with the University of Nottingham to take on a postgraduate student on placement for a period of 3 months starting in January. This is the third time we have participated in the University’s programme and we are delighted to have recruited Fiorenza Dossetto into the role.
