Creative Derbyshire newsletter: April 2012

A warm welcome to the second edition of the Creative Derbyshire newsletter, bringing you the latest news of interest to the creative industries sector in Derbyshire!

The last few months have been very busy as we have continued to develop a programme of development and support based on the needs of the creative sector in Derbyshire. As part of our business development programme we have now hosted five ‘Ignite your Creativity’ Roadshows across the county, several ‘Introduction to Social Media’ workshops and an ‘Innovation Expo’ event. We also delivered a ‘Press & PR workshop’ and a session on ‘How to sell your work online’. Check out the full programme of events and training opportunities below. Forthcoming events Over the next few months we will continue to provide high quality and tailored training events for creative businesses, focusing on the areas where you have told us you need the most support. Check out details of our forthcoming workshops below. Places tend to book up fast so make sure you don’t miss out! Visit our Eventbrite page now to secure your place.

Derbyshire Education Business Partnership
Creative STEM Ambassadors Induction
Friday 25 April, 2pm, Denby House Business Centre, Loscoe. Free.

Creative Derbyshire is pleased to be working with the Derbyshire Education Business Partnership (DEBP) to provide a creative input to their STEM Ambassadors programme. STEM Ambassadors are people from Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths backgrounds who volunteer as inspiring role models for young people in schools. On Friday 25 April we are running an induction event with DEBP for new STEM Ambassadors from the creative sector.

Ambassadors can contribute both to regular lessons or participate in extra curricular activities such as STEM Clubs, Careers Days and visits. STEM Ambassadors open the door to a whole new world for young people, helping them to see STEM subjects and careers with a fresh perspective and engage their interest and imagination in new ways. There are also regular networking events for STEM Ambassadors, giving creative businesses the opportunity to meet and network with a wide range of contacts from other sectors.

Press and PR for the Creative Sector
Friday 11 May, 12.45pm – 4.00pm, Ilkeston Library, cost £15.

Back by popular demand! Due to excellent feedback from participants, we have added an additional date to the Press and PR workshop for the creative sector. The workshop is now open for booking and will take place at Ilkeston Library on the 11th May. The workshop focuses on:

- Creating the right messages
- Developing your brand
- How to grab the attention of journalists
- Increasing public understanding and knowledge of your work
- Writing press releases that get picked up

We hope to announce additional dates shortly at venues around the County.

Meet the Curator
Thursday 17 May, 10.00am -– 4.00pm, QUAD. Free.

Based on our research into the areas where creative businesses most want support through the programme, we are running an event in May to provide better access to opportunities to showcase and sell work.

Creative Derbyshire’s ‘Meet the Curator’ is taking place in partnership with QUAD and will bring together curators, exhibition organisers, buyers and programmers with the most exciting emerging creative talent from Derbyshire. The event is a unique opportunity for visual artists, makers and craftspeople to drop in and visit a range of stands and speak to arts organisations, venues and galleries face to face about what they are looking for and how to get selected for exhibition or sales opportunities.

The event is FREE and consists of two identical ‘drop in’ sessions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We ask that artists book in advance onto only one of these sessions via our Eventbrite site www.creativederbyshire.eventbrite.com. If you are a gallery, arts organisation or venue who is interested in exhibiting at the event please email Jane@s4w.org.uk.

New features on our website We have recently made changes to our online portal www.creativederbyshire.com including providing more information on business support, more up to date jobs and opportunities, news and events and a new feature enabling you to submit a creative quandary to our team to see if we can help your business! Our website is being updated all the time and contains a vast array of information on how to access business support to help your creative business grow.

Derbyshire Times Business Awards - Creative Innovation Award Creative Derbyshire is pleased to be working with the Derbyshire Times to incorporate a Creative Innovation Award into the 2012 Derbyshire Times Business Awards. The winning creative business will have shown significant innovation in their business practice. This may be through innovative ways of reaching new audiences, developing new artistic processes and products, adopting technology at the heart of the business or using arts and creativity as a solution to practical problems and issues. The Business Awards are due to be launched in May 2012.

‘Ignite your Creativity’ Roadshows After undertaking extensive research on support needs of creative businesses over the summer, in autumn 2011 we launched the first networking and business development events of the Creative Derbyshire programme. We delivered ‘Ignite Your Creativity’ Roadshows in Ilkeston, Rowsley, Belper, Glossop and Swadlincote. The events provided networking opportunities, business case studies, local information, further details of the programme and the opportunity to meet business support providers.

There were over 150 attendees across the events and a total of 70% of the businesses attending found the events excellent or very useful. The roadshows have also given us excellent feedback as to how to tailor our interventions to support creative businesses more effectively within the county. Business Development Workshops Our business development workshops have proved to be very popular. Attendees have given positive feedback, commenting that they have been useful and informative and have come away with valuable tips and new practical skills which can be applied to their business. We have run five workshops, supporting over 50 artists and businesses, with many more planned in the future. Workshops delivered to date include How to Sell Your Creative Output Online (with Stylistic Gallery), Press and PR for the Creative Sector (with Culture Business) and Introduction to Social Media (with SocialMyna). For details and booking information for all of Creative Derbyshire’s events and workshops please click here. (Please note some of our events have a small booking fee).

Young Creatives Network Creative Derbyshire has a commitment to nurturing new talent and providing opportunities for young people and emerging artists. To this end we launched our first Young Creatives Networking Event in March in partnership with Déda, aimed at young aspiring dance artists. The event was a great success and everyone who attended found it valuable and inspiring. Special thanks go to multi award-winning choreographer and Déda Artist Katie Green, young Derbyshire choreographer Alexa Mason and Alice Vale from Adaire to Dance who all gave excellent presentations. For further information about our programme of Young Creatives Networking events and how to get involved, please visit our website http://www.creativederbyshire.com/young-people.html.

Creative Derbyshire is a programme of support and development for artists, arts organisations and creative businesses across Derbyshire. Our focus is on developing the creative economy in Derbyshire and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. Creative Derbyshire was established in 2010 in response to research undertaken by Derbyshire County Council into the needs of the arts and creative industries sector in Derbyshire.

Creative Derbyshire is funded by Arts Derbyshire and Arts Council England. The programme is co-ordinated by S4W Ltd.
